ABSTRACT

In “A vision of early childhood curriculum built on strong foundations,” authors Delaney, Whyte, and Graue explore the foundations of early childhood curricula and approaches responsive to the diverse life worlds of all children. As educational accountability creeps into early childhood and expectations for teachers, children and families shift, early childhood educators have valuable knowledge for informing policy and practice with young children. In addition, for those who take the role of critical advocates, this knowledge can be used to promote practices that support all children and families, not just those seen as the norm. This chapter is part exploration of current practices, part reclamation of what we know children need to be successful, happy and engaged learners, and part advocacy and vision for a shared future of what early childhood education can and should be.
