ABSTRACT

The idea of having a clear and purposeful mindset during an investigation is very similar to the mindset within leadership. In many ways leadership is about raising or maintaining performance through conversation and action. And the degree of authenticity and situational self-awareness we have will affect our leadership. This also applies to one's mindset and thus to their leadership in investigations. Setting oneself up to succeed, setting one teams up to succeed and then supporting them through what can be a difficult and emotional period will boost the likelihood of success. The basis of much of what is covered in this book is driven from Dekker's definition of safety as described in Just Culture: Balancing Safety and Accountability. In his words, safety is "the presence of positive capabilities, capacities and competencies that make things go right and not as the absence of things that go wrong". Erik Hollnagel's and Todd Conklin's descriptions of safety are very similar to this.
