ABSTRACT

The subtext of the chapter addresses the question: “Why read Kojève?” It will put aside the Kojève of the “end of history,” and will introduce the idea that a correct reading of Kojève as a philosopher of time will place today’s headlines in context. The chapter will carefully analyze the seminal statement in Kojève’s pre-war Introduction to the Reading of Hegel: “Man is Time, and Time is Man.” The chapter will present Kojève as borrowing on elements of Hegel and Heidegger, earning Kojève a unique place in modern political philosophy.
