ABSTRACT

There is a wide selection of textbooks available that deal with aspects of workplace writing but the majority of these are more specifically focused on writing and speaking in business contexts, usually containing the term "business communication" in the title. It is probably fair to say that even though some instructors are more comfortable working without textbooks, and are happy to rely on their own ideas and materials or those of their colleagues, textbooks nevertheless represent an important resource for many of those involved in teaching workplace writing. A further aspect of business communication textbooks that merits investigation is the often narrow range of workplace activity that is afforded by the world of business and its attendant forces, and that is typically considered by these books in their coverage of spoken and written communication. In relation to genre, it was seen that genre knowledge is a wide-ranging affair.
