ABSTRACT

The violence which disfigured Northern Ireland during its long conflict was extreme and multi-faceted. Its roots could be found in a long history of inequality, abuses of power and previous bitter conflicts. The conversation provides an opportunity for the person to be open about the extent of their use of violence and begin to get some understanding of this in bringing down the wall and committing to non-violence. The chapter focuses on the forms of more common violence that occurs within relationships, families and communities. There are the different types of common violence that includes physical force, threatening actions, sexually abusive actions, bossing and controlling, emotional/psychological abuse. The person should now connect the general picture of violence explored above with their own personal situation. The purpose of the conversation is to help the person be open about the extent and the ways in which they use violent acts, and how these may link to their thinking and feelings.
