Introduction

This chapter introduces the story of the World Bank and other international actors working to increase transboundary water cooperation between India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. There are many contextual factors that make their work both challenging and important. This chapter provides an overview of these, as well as some of the lessons learned from the experience of the South Asia Water Initiative. Definitions of key concepts used throughout this book are also presented in this chapter.
