ABSTRACT

The state is an overarching all-embracing institution to regulate the actions of all its citizens so that there is no anarchy, and everybody's fundamental rights to life, property and peace are protected from any transgression. While trying to understand Gandhi's attitude to the state, it is essential to keep in mind that there is not just one type of a state, but there can be a wide range of them, and to know whether he opposed a particular type or every type of the state in general. Gandhi's main objective in his emphasis on cottage and small industries was to create productive full employment for the poor in all areas of the country. Seeing through a Gandhian perspective, a genuine democratization of the polity can be based only on a democratized economy. The beauty of Gandhian approach is that egalitarianism and inclusiveness are built into his way of economic and political development.
