ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the theoretical issues concerning the location of urban facilities, in particular welfare services such as educational and recreational centres. As a theory for the location of cities, it sees central places as existing to provide goods and services for the consumption of people both within and without the city boundaries. The spatial behaviour of youths with respect to the location of educational and outdoor recreational facilities are the patterns of interaction that result from the needs of youths to study and enjoy recreation. The chapter presents some empirical evidence as to the location and consumption of the facilities in Nigeria and focuses on the identification of the associated problems and their possible solutions. It concludes with the notion that increasing suburbanisation of our cities calls for more concerted efforts in researching into the range of these facilities and the need to make them accessible to consumers.
