ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a cool technique for photographing star trails, along with some quick processing procedures. Star trails photography is a ton of fun. However, photographer need to stay out late, sometimes all night in chilly conditions, to get a great image. To capture star trails, photographers basically have two options: one, they need to either take one very long exposure; or two, take several exposures and combine them into one image in post-processing. Using the North Star as a focus point will yield the circular results photographers see in the opening image, with a pinpoint being the center mark. In the southern hemisphere, they would use the Southern Cross constellation for a center point of rotation. The chapter offers some new astrophotography shooting options—as long as the clouds and weather cooperate.
