ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at what the histogram and alert tell photographers and how to use that information. It utilizes the histogram in Photoshop's Levels dialog box simply because it's a bit larger on a monitor than the one in Lightroom making it easier to read when reproduced in a book and e-book. Generally speaking, a histogram is a graphic display where the data are grouped into ranges and then plotted as bars. The histogram shows only mid-tones. The red circles show the shadow and highlight triangle sliders. The idea, as illustrated by the image on the right, is to move the highlight and shadow sliders to the end of the "mountain range". The image on the left looks flat while the image on the right looks vibrant with more of that awesome blue color. In photography a histogram shows photographers the distribution of the different brightness levels in the scene.
