ABSTRACT

Agricultural, industrial and domestic activities of humans have generated a huge amount of wastewater containing a variety of pollutants, which have imposed a severe water scarcity. The adsorption-membrane filtration hybrid process has shown potential as an efficient and economical wastewater treatment process to generate recyclable water as compared to conventional wastewater treatment techniques. This chapter gives an insight into adsorption enhanced membrane filtration hybrid process for wastewater treatment application. The hybrid process can utilize a variety of sorbents depending on their sorption characteristics. Adsorption process and membrane filtration process are discussed individually along with the hybrid process. The effect of operating parameters of the membrane and the adsorbent on the hybrid process is discussed. The chapter also presents characteristics of different hybridization schemes combining adsorption with membrane filtration.
