ABSTRACT

Like the broader animal protection movement of which it is a part, the animal sanctuary movement is the product of a diverse range of philosophical perspectives and aspirations for the future of animals. Sanctuaries provided new models of rescue and care for animals that had not been served by the country’s century-old shelter system. This contribution introduces the animal sanctuary movement while also considering the contradictions between sanctuaries’ ethical visions and the practical limitations of everyday captive animal care.
