ABSTRACT

A virtual environment designer that wishes to be ensured that the design component will provide at least a minimum amount of perceivable stimulus to the user can opt for a design strategy that is based on suprathreshold stimulation. This is a sense-limited stratagem, which might be more accurately described as sensory fidelity because it is simply defining a minimal stimulus level that will trigger a user’s sensory receptors. Sensory fidelity is not task-dependent and does not require specification of the types of task that the user of the device might perform.
