ABSTRACT
By orienting Morocco’s history within a narrative of nostalgia and memory, Chapter 1 connects musical practice to larger questions of class and memory. Following performers who reinforce the country’s imperial history by performing it as a celebrated part of a specific form of “classical” music, one that is connected to religion and piety, this chapter describes Morocco’s Andalusian tradition, known as al-ala.
