ABSTRACT
Morocco’s influence on global styles introduces this chapter on popular music. Following discussions of religion and music, an introduction to the basics of the Islamic faith, and Morocco’s place within the wider history of the Middle East, Chapter 2 explores musical and religious influences from abroad. These include a discussion of Egypt’s media dominance, Algerian rai, and more recent forms of digital mass media that frame the more localized practices that follow.
