ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Context-Sensitivity. The issue is closely related to another one about how to individuate that which concepts are of, namely ways for things to be. The irreducibility of conceptual capacities to recognitional ones depends on the impossibility of determining, what it amounts for something to count as the same way of being. The idea of delimiting a range of situations may perhaps be unproblematic. But the important point is that propositions are meant to eliminate the kind of ambiguities that one can find at the level of words. The important point for our purposes is the role that the idea of circumstances or occasions plays in that criticism. The criticism is that no systematic link can be established between the meaning of a sentence and what it can be used to say – and, more specifically, that no link can be established between the meanings of a sentence and when, the corresponding statement would be true.
