ABSTRACT

Auditory cues, such as notification sounds on smartphones, or feedback of errors or confirmation on spoken home devices such as Google Home or Amazon Echo, are common. These represent simple examples of auditory cues, ways to quickly and efficiently present information to users in an auditory display (Kramer 1994). In this chapter we explore the different auditory cue techniques that have been developed, how to compare and consider their use in different situations, how they can best be designed and where they have been found useful.
