ABSTRACT

This chapter explores interface design for sound installations. Interfaces for how we engage with sound can be as simple as hearing with our ears and feeling vibrations in our bodies, but they can also extend to devices, tangible designs and motion that can interact with and control sound. We explore the concepts behind many technologies (devices, sensors, programs) by highlighting prominent artists and creatives that offer unique strategies and methods of production. Various mapping strategies are presented and discussed according to how they contribute to different interactive experiences. These examples and discussions of interfaces illustrate practical applications that can be used to create sound installations with engaging interactions.
