ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the role of sound spatialization in installation practices. It provides background information in relation to the functioning of perceptual cues for spatial hearing, including details on how different types of sound materials affect ease of localization. It further discusses sound spatialization technologies, including stereophonic, Ambisonic and binaural approaches. Coverage of the role of room acoustics and diffusion is combined with a discussion of aesthetic and conceptual issues in relation to localization, immersion and spatial scale. The chapter integrates this discussion with a consideration of how such factors relate to broader imperatives within installation art.
