ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the framework of the Moroccan philosopher Taha Abderrahmane (b. 1944) for further analysis of European Islamic thought from within the tradition. Abderrahmane proposes what he calls the “trusteeship paradigm” as an ethical framework for renewal of Islamic thought. The chapter uses his “three innovative plans” for understanding the Qur’an: “humanization–rationalization–historicization,” and uses three other axes/levels of analysis to apply these innovative plans to European Islam: “world–society–individual axes.” The definition given to European Islam in this work is the result of the application of this analytical framework
