ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some salient ideas about gender. Gender is different from sexuality as it refers to the social and psychological dimensions of being female and male. In marriage or permanent relationships, an important initial step is developing empathy for the partner’s understanding of the relationship and taking practical steps in solving misconceptions in the interest of more human happiness. The total psychological and socio-cultural dimensions associated with being male or female are referred to as gender. From the perspective of traditional gender stereotypes, men are seen as the breadwinners in society and are expected to be more assertive, independent and oriented toward power, status and dominance. Female stereotypes describe women and girls as being more sensitive, warm and expressive in their interactions. Women have traditionally behaved consistently with these gender roles that correspond to stereotypes emphasizing their nurturing presence in the home and as emotional support for husbands and children.
