ABSTRACT

Multiple victim murder may be the result of one or more attackers. The victims often share a common connection such as familial, employment, or social connection that places them in the same location at the same time for the murders. Serial murders are committed by a single person, with each incident separated by a passage of time. The motivation in serial crimes is frequently sexual fantasy fulfillment or the need to violently demonstrate power or mastery. If the desire is fantasy fulfillment there is a link and commonality between each of the crimes, though it may be difficult to discover and unfortunately may only become apparent over multiple victims. Spree killings generally involve multiple victims in single or linked locations. Spree killings often involve targeting against a group of people who represent an individual or a group that the attacker perceives as causing him or her continual harm or oppression.
