ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses what is more important to a great mashup than using the right techniques is picking the right elements. If we were to take a country music song, and throw a death metal screaming vocal over the top, we are probably going to confuse and irritate both our country fans and our death metal fans. Big artists that sit halfway between DJs and live music acts, such as Daft Punk, Justice, Porter Robinson and Madeon are famous for making their live sets an ocean of mashed-up ideas. Whilst mashups can be a great way to transition from one energy level to another, they're going to be harder to manage as the difference between our tracks becomes too great, and the audience will find the change too sudden to accept. Energy is defined by the types of instruments used in the production.
