ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will learn about two case studies, namely Tasnim Baghdadi’s art and the poetry association I-Slam that contribute via artistic expressions to participatory culture. Their publics can be viewed as soft forms of counterpublics, as they are neither strong counterpublics nor beyond counterpublics. Both the Muslim community and the wider German society are targeted. Motivations and themes are diverse. While there is a natural interest in the arts as a tool of pure self-expression, there is also the intention to speak to people through the arts and to occasionally challenge mainstream discourses about Muslims. Themes cover different issues, such as multiple identities, greed, fashion and stereotypes.
