ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an introductory overview of issues like copyright, data protection, safeguarding of vulnerable people and duties of confidentiality and of disclosure. But legislation and the enforcement of legislation vary considerably across countries and jurisdictions. Further complexities arise from the dissemination of oral history material across jurisdictions, especially via the Internet. The chapter focuses on some of the areas where special care is needed. The first step is to give all the potential narrators and partners an Information Sheet outlining all the parameters of the project. It is best practice to arrange beforehand for the interviews to be deposited in an archive, library, museum or university after the policy outcomes have been decided. Data protection is the growing field of law that governs the safe and appropriate handling of information about others. Logistics start with the budget because—assuming it is finite—it defines the limits of your project's staffing, equipment and timescales.
