ABSTRACT

The chapter will examine the establishment of the Institute of Women’s Studies at Birzeit University and the contributions it has made during different phases of Palestinian history. It will particularly focus on the 1990s, when the Palestinian Authority established its autonomy and pushed higher education institutions into a new stage of globalised culture. The chapter reflects the dynamic reflection and responsiveness of the Institute’s programs to the real context of colonial occupation and nation-building. It looks at the dual reality of resistance and nation-building through the Institute's different programs: teaching, research, gender intervention and outreach.
