ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an analysis of existing literature on the relationship between higher education and conflict and how teaching, research and service impact on and are impacted by the dynamics of conflict-affected environments. It considers the significance of universities to the values, attitudes and behaviour of young people, and the ‘two faces’ of higher education as a negative and a positive force. It explores the contribution that the Higher Education sector can make to nationalism, identity, citizenship and conflict transformation and looks at the ways in which it has helped to resist occupation, respond to crisis or rebuild war-torn societies.
