ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the different roles played by Queen’s University Belfast, from acting as a ‘zone of civility’ during the Troubles (a space relatively protected from surrounding violence in which staff and students could experiment with identities free from their segregated neighbourhoods) to its current research into helping to deal with the legacy of violence, locally and nationally. The development of a ‘Social Charter’ marks the University’s commitment to global civic awareness and shows how, as a university, it has come through a period of violence. Queen's now seeks to ensure that some of the lessons they have learned are shared in other conflict affected parts of the world.
