ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes a range of corpus tools, tests and types of analysis that are commonly used by corpus linguists and introduces the area of vocabulary studies and discusses terms such as 'type', 'token', 'lemma' and 'word family'. Considering the fact that corpus techniques have become "an indispensable component of the methodological toolbox" of modern applied linguists, the book introduces a range of corpus tools and procedures that are increasingly important for investigating patterns and intricacies within naturally occurring language. More specifically, Corpus Linguistics for Vocabulary has been written as a practical guide for students, teachers and language practitioners with little or no experience in corpus analysis. The understanding of these terms is crucial for conducting research in this area of linguistic study.
