ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the power relations between the sponsoring organisations and host organisations, but it recognizes that this is but one dimension of the situation and that the relative standing and goals of all few groups must be considered. The power dynamics between organisations also represent a much larger picture that includes the power of the sponsor or volunteer's country relative to the host's country, particularly given that most volunteers are of European descent while most patients are of non-European descent or represent Indigenous people. When seeking to understand and address the global power dynamics that have developed throughout history in order to improve global health, it is essential to listen to the voices of those who have been most affected by short-term volunteer programmes. Volunteers should carefully consider whether and how to travel with materials that reflect or symbolise power, such as a camera.
