ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an exploration of neocolonialism as a child of colonialism, with biomedical components aswell as the economic. It examines the God, Gold and Glory elements of the colonial enterprise, to review whether this might also be part of the current global health one. Evidence for gold or profit with medical electives and missions as well as with research are presented, the glory in fulfilling personal and policy goals is highlighted. Although individuals may have mixed motivations, even those with good intentions can do harm; the chapter reviews reasons for change including damage done, but also distress among trainees. The chapter provides suggestions and models for clinical experiences, medical missions and service projects, so it concentrates on less addressed elements with suggestions as to ways to improve assessment of the quality of experiences and to move beyond neocolonialism in research.
