ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the philosophical evolution of global health education in the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) Department of Internal Medicine, highlighting the Makerere University-Yale University (MUYU) collaboration as an example of a bilateral medical education capacity building relationship. It describes the development of the collaboration, as well as address concerns related to equity and retention of medical expertise. The YSM Department of Medicine has been sponsoring ongoing international health elective clinical rotations for residents since 1981, initially under the framework of the International Health Programme (IHP). The idea of MUYU was born in 2002 when former YSM faculty member Majid Sadigh travelled to Kampala to teach about HIV. In the first 10 years, MUYU has facilitated the exchange of 17 Ugandan physicians for the purpose of developing their clinical and research expertise in various non-communicable disease subspecialties, cumulatively spending 141 months at YNHH and Yale-affiliated hospitals.
