ABSTRACT

The Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD) was founded in 1995 and was recently recognised by the UN when it was granted special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council. It currently partners with more than 250 community organisations in Argentina, Bolivia, India, Kenya, Nicaragua and Uganda working in various sectors ranging from health to agriculture, financial services, income generating activities, and clean energy as appropriate to their communities' needs and priorities. In particular, FSD places emphasis on the following elements: partnership and relationship management; matching intern interests and strengths with partner needs; and managing expectations and building a common understanding of its asset-based community development approach. The elements also include values around sustainability and internship methodology; providing a framework and tools to interns for listening to the community; and the co-development of a work plan and budget between the intern and host organisation.
