ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses best practices for global health in graduate medical education (GME) training, dividing the topic between residency programmes and post-residency fellowships within the United States. It explains three broad categories of residency global health programmes: residencies, pathways and informal programmes. All global health programmes in a residency setting are subject to the guidelines of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the Residency Review Committee (RRC) for that specialty. The requirements vary considerably between specialties. A global health fellowship acts as a logical extension of the global health pathway in residency. A global health fellowship curriculum can provide a diploma/certificate training in tropical medicine, faculty development, capacity building, public health and systems development and advanced scholarly work. Global health work is guided by the principles of social justice, overcoming healthcare disparities, and providing low resource medical care in any setting.
