ABSTRACT

A large body of research examines determinants of sustainability reporting. Examples include company-specific features such as size, strategic attitude, organizational culture and financial performance. External forces (including industry characteristics and country level governance and culture) and stakeholder pressures are also relevant. Collectively, these factors have a direct impact on sustainability proactivity, specifically the sophistication of companies’ management protocols, accounting systems and stakeholder engagement processes. If these proactivity elements are well established, the organization is more likely to achieve higher levels of accountability leading to improved sustainability and integrated reporting and ultimately, organizational legitimacy.
