ABSTRACT

Using the taxonomy, it is easy to distinguish similarities and differences among the famous stories. Argo won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2012. The next year, 12 Years a Slave won the same award. On the surface, the 2001 animated family comedy Shrek doesn't seem to have much in common with the 1969 classic live-action drama Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. One is a satirical fantasy film, while the other is an epic western. Both Casablanca and The Imitation Game take place during World War II. Yet neither screenplay fits the classical definition of the war supergenre. This duo adapted one novel into two of the most famous films of all time: The Godfather and The Godfather II. On the surface, the two films seem very similar. However, upon closer inspection, one will notice how the screenwriters changed the microgenres, voice and pathways to create two very different films.
