ABSTRACT

In 2010, China passed Japan to become the world's second-largest economy behind the United States. This chapter examines how China is "fixing the best" education system in the world. The Chinese Dream is a parallel to the American Dream. Xi describes the Chinese Dream as achieving two centenary goals: a material goal whereby China would become a "moderately well-off society" by 2020, the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party; and a modernization goal whereby China would become a fully developed nation by 2049, the 100th anniversary of the People's Republic of China. In addition to geographical and economic factors, education inequality in China is a by-product of political and cultural factors. Besides teacher/administrator rotation, the school management system is another area that has been experimented with in China in recent years. China is experimenting with three school reform models that may alleviate society's hunger for excellent schools: school takeover, school corporations with excellent schools, and school expansion.
