ABSTRACT

The anti-corruption movement in India led by Anna Hazare was post-ideological in its exhortations and appearance. However, scratching the surface exposes a deeply rightist ideological undercurrent. This chapter seeks to make linkages between the nature of leadership, context and the larger ideological firmament in which a mass mobilization on this scale was possible. The role of mass media as a catalyst for the movement has been particularly outlined. While the spectacular movement was short-lived, its footprints can be seen in recent developments in Indian politics.
