ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the impact of civilizational history in early Meiji Japan and how it overwrote the preexisting Sinocentric notion of time and order. I then show how Meiji thinkers came to realize that European civilizational history will always condemn those in the Orient in the category of the belated to illustrate how the turn to the cultural understanding of historical development is informed by the limits encountered.
