ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the concepts of health and being healthy and how this impacts our understandings and practices in relation to young children’s current and future healthy development. Tensions between individualistic and social understandings of health are explored through investigating the social determinants of health (e.g. social class, poverty, race, rural location) and how structuring forces impact upon the abilities of individual children, families, communities and societies to achieve good health outcomes.
