ABSTRACT
The merchants’ organizations went through three stages: the clan, the kinship organization; huiguan, the geographically based organization; and hanghui/gongsuo, the business related organization. As Chinese society was defined by a tradition of kingship and native-place ties, the three types of organizations did not replace one another in history. Rather, they coexisted and overlapped in their organizations.
