ABSTRACT
The detailed studies on the interaction between the merchant and the communal life in this chapter deepen our understanding of peculiar social roles played by merchants in the modern times. This chapter selects Huizhou society as a case study to make an in-depth analysis and exploration of four aspects – merchants and women, merchants and the family, the structure of patriarchal clans, and the expansion of the living space of the merchant and community.
