ABSTRACT

Gan Yang has generally considered the relationship between civil society in Western Europe and modern states as non-antagonistic, while seeing the relationship between the Chinese folk society and feudal offices as antagonistic. The basic setup of Chinese traditional politics is not the dichotomy of civil versus offices described by Gan Yang. Indeed, Thomas Meadows once said that China is a state where armed rebellion occurs most, and the histories such as villages and underworld gangs refusing to pay rent and disobeying the law are too numerous to mention. Rites of Zhou is designated to separate people according to their residence and political ambitions, while in reality, it is clear that a country has its laws and a family has its rules, which tends to make the rivalry between the state order and the village order in China convincing.
