ABSTRACT

Deep understanding is a phrase that many people discuss and strive toward, but few people agree on its definition. Drawing inspiration from the career of Art Graesser and the learning sciences, we outline seven claims and principles that characterize various elements of depth at different degrees of specificity. Following this discussion, we explore one way to measure deep understanding and learning through a new technique, called scenario-based assessment, and highlight how it may improve construct coverage while maintaining instructional relevance.
