ABSTRACT
Latinx Studies scholars seek to understand how Latinx creators of art in time and space distill then reconstruct Latinx identities and experiences in ways that make new the perception, thought, and feeling of its audiences. There are several interpretive tributaries that make up the different ways that Latinx Studies approaches the arts. Latinx artists have found ways to dedicate their time and minds to the making of art—and this in spite of gatekeeping policies and practices that have tried to exclude them. Latinx artists were considered unworthy of museum and other sanctified spaces; many of the curators of the art world considered anything by Latinxs too lowbrow, regional, primitive, or even peasant-like. The individual and collective efforts of Latinx artists also showed the nation the significant presence and importance of Latinx art. More and more Latinx scholars have been turning their attention to interpreting and analyzing the Latinx arts.
