ABSTRACT

Latinxs in Texas have cultivated a long history in the state as well as in the United States. Latinxs in the Southwest have historically been religious due to the long history of Catholicism in the area, and they have helped create their own variant of Catholicism that has conflated the tenets of the religion with the indigenous belief system. Many Hispanics in New Mexico hold dearly to their Spanish lineage, and they go to great pains to clarify their distinction from Mexican Americans and other Latinx subgroups. In the Southwest, the other large grouping of Latinxs must surely be in California. A significantly distinct group of Latinxs happens to reside in the state of Florida. There the dominant Latinx subgroup is that of Cuban origin, for clear geographical reasons. To begin to understand Latinx regionalism, careful consideration of the history behind the decisions to migrate and settle into certain areas is a necessary task.
