ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book is based on the International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP) III white paper, aims to give a comprehensive understanding of the current state of research on sustainability and sustainable development in the Arctic and identifies related knowledge gaps and research priorities. It provides a historical overview of sustainability concepts in global and Arctic contexts, a progress report on Arctic sustainability research, and recommendations for prioritizing research. The book analyzes progress towards Science Plans 1, 2, 10 and 11, focusing on economic development, indigenous considerations, social–ecological change, and research processes and communication, respectively. It identifies future research priorities through this review of research on sustainability and sustainable development in areas of interest identified by ICARP II and areas that have emerged since 2005. The book focuses on theory, methodology, synthesis, indicators, governance, and ecological dimensions.
