ABSTRACT

Arctic researchers made contributions in developing social and environmental indicators and implementing community-based methodologies of community-oriented, community-relevant research. It is the assessment that Arctic sustainability research is becoming a leading regional contributor to global knowledge about sustainability. This chapter focuses on elucidating a few actionable research priorities. These priorities were selected based on several criteria such as: the ability to address identifiable knowledge gaps; the ability to build on progress over the past decade; the ability to be actionable on a decadal basis; the relevance to society in the sense of having practical applicability. The chapter aims to describe a number of key elements that will be important for future research planning. They include knowledge gaps, both general and Arctic specific, research priorities for the next decade and actionable research items that specific directions researchers and funding agencies could pursue to serve these priorities.
