ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of Unit C and provides my own first impressions, along with those of clients and staff. I will introduce the client group who were involved in my research, privileging their voices and their perspectives on life. The chapter describes women’s perspectives on the reasons why they are in the unit and on their overall life experiences. It also describes their daily activities, in an attempt to give an idea of how it feels to spend time on the unit and to show how gender, disability and also class permeate day-to-day life on Unit C. Finally, the women’s perspectives on day services are outlined and issues such as evening/social activities and security are discussed.
