ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews various curricular and extracurricular programmes of five Malaysian research universities that have designed for sustainability. Special focus is given to problem and project-based learning, as they are being introduced at the undergraduate and graduate level, with the goal of offering experience-based guidance. The potency of these programmes is discussed, presenting strengths and weaknesses of programmes and modules, and their impacts on students and society. Conclusions and recommendations are based on a comparative analysis with the courses offered in some world-recognised universities. These guidelines could help Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programmes in higher education systems in Malaysian academia to have effective, useful, robust and scientifically sound pedagogy. Moreover, the findings can inform and support the ongoing transformation in sustainability education, and may provide direction to future leaders for contributing to society.
